Sometimes I despair

MANILA, Philippines — Documents on the much-criticized $329.5-million contract between Manila and Beijing that was to launch the Philippine bureaucracy into cyberspace were stolen hours after it was signed in the Chinese resort of Hainan on April 22.

Stolen.

Brilliant.

‘Gee, I think I’ll leave these original documents lying about in my hotel room where people can break in and take them.’

The sheer incompetence is mind-boggling, if it is incompetence and not malice.

I must admit, I haven’t been keeping up with the news from back home. I suppose I never really cared that much. But when I saw that Trillanes had become a senator I despaired some more. This is a man who led a mutiny some four years ago, when he and his men drove tanks (TANKS!) onto the main thoroughfare of Manila, EDSA, and took an entire hotel complex hostage.

And now he’s a senator.

I suppose you can hardly do worse.

Either everybody conveniently forgot about the whole ‘tanks and hostages and mutiny’ thing, or this is the best way the voters know how to give a huge ‘fuck you’ to the administration.

I’m thinking it’s both. After a while you become sick of the traditional politicians, the smarmy, slick stereotypes, and a fresh face comes along and you can’t help but go ‘Hell, why not?’. At least it’s someone new. Maybe he might even shake things up a bit.

I bet a senator serving from jail, who’s proven that he’s willing to take the administration head-on, will do just that.

But I don’t have to like it.
