Aegina, finally
25 February 2008 · 1 Comment
On a Thursday night after dinner, almost on impulse, I ask a friend of mine to accompany me to Aegina on Saturday.
It was one of my better impulses, as the weather was divine and the island was beautiful, and I wondered why I didn’t do it sooner.

Argolid Weekend
17 February 2008 · 2 Comments
This weekend was basically a massive deja-vu as all of CYA went to the Argolid (specifically, Mycenae, Nafplion, Epidavros, and Tiryns), places which were the first stops of Winter Term 2006.
Complete with snow in Athens! It’s uncanny.

police and thieves…well, not quite
14 February 2008 · 5 Comments
At one in the morning I am rudely awakened by the doorbell. After fiddling with the keys and opening my door, there is a policeman standing there with a clipboard and a loud walkie-talkie.
I am so confused.

Having five-hour lunches…

in my case means going down with Molly and Jean (who did not know that the Patriots lost, resulting in her letting out an earth-shattering scream in the middle of the flea market when she found out I wasn’t lying) to the touristy areas for lunch (because only there are establishments open on Sundays), singing Low out loud in public and having an impromptu dance party at the ancient Agora (thanks to my phone’s speaker capabilities and flashing lights), being approached by a couple of sketchy men as a result, going up to the Areopagus, hearing my ankle pop nastily, searching high and low for a cheap cafe, and then finally going back to my flat at 17.45.
There are pictures, albeit very few. But there should be more to come soon.

Winter in Athens…
6 February 2008 · Leave a Comment
is mostly rain. On my way to class this morning my usually wonderful view of Athens was obscured by low-hanging clouds and a general atmosphere of gloom that I thought I left behind when I flew out of the UK.
It’s better now though; the sun is out.

Class on Philopappos Hill
2 February 2008 · 1 Comment
This Monday I put my non-existent map skills to the test and found my way to the Acropolis metro station, where I met the rest of my Archaeology of Athens class, and we went up to the top of Philoppapos Hill, from where a good view of Athens can be had. Seen from a relatively high vantage point, Athens looks like a morass of buildings. It’s like they tried to cram as much city as possible in the space given to them. With the occasional patch of green, of course.

Or: turn that music down! Darn kids!
There is a person blasting very loud music on my street tonight as I try to sleep. In the past half hour I’ve heard ‘What is Love?’ that Fergie song that spells ‘glamorous’, a Nelly Furtado song, some Interpol, ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, ‘People Are People’, and music varying from the utterly abject to fairly tolerable. Although I did like it when they played some Joy Division. But at the risk of sounding like a grumpy 80-year-old, some of us need our sleep!
Man. I am a grumpy 80-year-old.
